Social realist
Outstanding examples include the sequel Kidult hood and Adulthood directed and written by both Noel Clarke and Menhaj Huda. The sequel explores the life of a group of troubled teenagers living in west London. What made the film so believable and appealing to young teenager was due to its realistic depiction of the everyday life faced by young teenager predominantly black. The films honesty and its exploration of drugs, street violence/crime, sex ect, has made it one of the best British social realist films.
Double Take
Double take is a urban realist/crime, directed by Toa stappard. The synopsis is that an opportunist thief finds himself on the receiving end when the tables are turned.
The plot is about a protagonist character who steals a bag, when he arrives back home he notices that there is someone watching him as theres a video recording of him stealing the bag on the video camera. The film ends by him going back upstairs being hit by the person who has observed and spied on him. The morale of the film is simply dont steal and what goes around comes back around.
On the behind the scene section the direcror stappard talks about how the film had been created in 1 day. Its a simple film as it provides us with so much content in just 10 shots.
The realism of the film is developed due its naturalism, theres a scene which includes natural lighting and one with a bunch of birds flying. Thus adding an ambient sound.
The Dipper
The dipper similar to double take is an urban realist, directed by PJ Harling. The synopsis is that an arrogant young pick pocket learns the hard way, that pride comes before a fall.
The short film has a dramatic twist. The plot is about an arrogant working class man who through stealing learns that what goes around comes around. Early off in the film he expresses the division in society and the pain and suffering of being a working class man, this suffering then drives him into committing crime, he firstly steals a young girls purse, however he doesn’t realise that the girl he had just robbed had planned it, as she knew that he had just killed her husband. Consequently the young man ends up arrested, despite the fact that steals and murders in order to obtain or encounter happiness.
