Questionnaire made before production and planning

In this questionnaire I tied to make it representative of the male and female audiences.
I chose 5 girls and 5 boys, in order to achieve this.
Instead of choosing random individuals I chose people who are enthusiastic about film, and have knowledge about it. This will be beneficial since it will give me valid and reliable results.

This result reinforces the fact that these individual are enthusiastic about film, as the majority of the result show that they watch films on a regular basis. Their regular viewings of the film highlight their understandings of films; this will help them answer the following questions.

I expected this result, the most popular genres Action Adventure and Horror would obvious have the majority. The result shows that the genre ‘social realist’ a genre which my film will be based on is unpopular in comparison to Horror and Action Adventure. This made me think about weather I should make a social realist film, since its audiences’ viewing isn’t sufficient

This result made me understand what I had to do in order to keep the audiences satisfied, as you can see the film has be entertaining for this reason he storyline has to be interesting and exciting and create suspense up until the end. The audiences also want to watch a film that creates awareness on an issue therefore depicting an issue which they have minimal or even no knowledge on.
At the same time the film should be creative in terms of production, so there has to be shots which are imaginative and innovating also have some special effects in it.

Despite the fact that the participants prefer other genres then social realist this result showed me that they still like social realism. For this reason I’m satisfied with the fact that the majority of participants enjoy social realist; this means that they will be willing to watch a social realist films.

This undermines the previous result even though they like social realist the length in which they watch social realist isnt lengthy. This highlighting the reality behind social realism, it’s not a genre which people are keen to watch but its more like a genre which people would watch when it’s on.

This result shows me that the audiences want me to stay in touch with the social realist genre by representing real life which is the essence of social realism. Similarly they also want me to create awareness on an issue. For these reason the audiences want me to stay true to the social realist genre. As you can see none of the audiences want humor since it’s not relevant to this genre.

Social realist films are usually about murder, crime and theft. This result highlights how these participants want something different like teenage depression and drugs. This made me more certain about creating a film about depression since its something different, also it will create awareness which is what these participants want.

My certainty about creating a film about depression was strengthened by this result. All the participants apart from one will go and see a film about depression. As a result of this I am 100% certain about creating a film about depression since all these participants are willing to watch it.

Editing Sound

At first I assumed that editing the sound would be much more difficult and complicated. I was wrong, the same software used for editing the film was used for this, so it required me to use the same technique used for editing the film.

As you can see in the image editing the film was exactly the same as editing the sound. The only thing i had to do was to just press the split clip button to edit the sound from where i wanted it to start and end.

Difficulties

In some cases there was sound, voice over’s and footages being played at the same time in the film, for example when he’s writing the suicide note and reading it aloud, and in the park when he’s screaming as he hears the scribbling. Having to put in place sound, voice over’s and footage simultaneously was difficult.

This image will explain

As you can see Audio 1 is footage, audio 2 is the voice over, and audio 3 is the sound. In the editing section of the image, the first section is of him writing you the suicide note and reading it out load in the voice over, the next block in the editing section is of him writing faster and reading the suicide note loudly because he hears the scribbling in audio 3. Having to arrange this was difficult, since each footage had to be the same length for example the writing of suicide note had to be in the same pace with the voice over and the sound of the scribbling had to be the same length with the footage (as when he writes faster the scribbling gets loader). This required a lot of time and focus, but was made easy since I was able to cut the footage and sound of the scribbling and make it in same pace with the voice over (something which I wasn’t able to cut, since i recorded each voice over once). This was also made easy since I was able to stretch tool to slightly fast forward the footage so it matches the voice over. As I gave the editing process I lot of time, I was eventually able to match all the audios together.

Recording voice over

In the voice over recordings, I used a recorder. I used this because I was not able to have access to the studios in the music dep, I was told by the head of music that sessions were booked for the week because of the Christmas concert. He then advised me to use this portable recorder, since its portable I was able to record the voice over’s straight away since me and Dylan had a free period. It also had a cover; this was beneficial since it improved the quality of the sound. Using it wasn’t too difficult I just had to press record, it also allowed me to replay the recording, this allowing me to hear what i being produced and therefore decide weather it was usable and in the right tone.

Music

First music choice

I was aware that my old English teacher produces music, so I asked him if he could allow me to use one of his tracks for my film, he said yes and gave me a link to his website which is copy right free. There was a list of tracks on the website, and I chose this one.

Botswana Ben

Reasons for choosing it

The song is continues the same instruments are used throughout. The song is dreary and unexciting; you feel as if something’s going to happen but nothing does. This aspect of the song fits perfectly with the walking scene. As he’s walking he feels and looks miserable and lost, I feel his down mood is highlighted in this track.

Second Music choice

Because of time, I wasn’t able to re-create the fix you song by Coldplay. For this reason I had to be pragmatic and find a soundtrack quickly. I knew that Dylan who plays Mark is in a band called ‘Them Getaways’ , and so I asked him if I was able to use a soundtrack from his band he willingly accepted. Through email he sent me a list of possible tracks which he thought were similar to the 'Fix You' song. The last 50 seconds of the track wass perfect for the film. Firstly there was no voice only the track, secondly it was uplifting, and thirdly it had similar sound and feel to the Coldplay song, for this reason I used these tracks for the film.

Uplifting Running scenes songs

Rocky

This type of song creates an uplifting feel, and helps reinforce the inspiration of the scene, as rocky get stronger and faster the song speeds in pace and pitch and therefore creates a moving feel and atmosphere.

Muhammed Ali

This song in Ali, also creates an uplifting feel but does it more subtly, its pitch is much more slower which fits the slow motion of Ali running through the African ghettos in the lead up to the legendary 'Rumble in the Jungle’.

Coldplay Fix You

I wanted to recreate the coldplay fix you song, from 2:25 to 4:24

In this part of the song a lot of shots are used to show him running, and it also uses a 360 degree shot before he runs. If I could recreate this is will be beneficial as it will enable me use a soundtrack that is firstly uplifting and secondly corresponds to the many shot used in this scene, similar to what happens in this song.

Editing

Once filming was finished I began editing on our school computer, Adobe Premiere Elements 4.

The first step was to upload all the filming footage on the camera onto Adobe using the USB wire

Once this was complete, the next step was to move the film clips (scene by scene) onto the editing section.

As you can see you just drag and drop the scenes or parts you want to edit.

We were told by our teachers that post production is longer then filming; I knew it would take me longer since I lacked editing experience.
Once this was done I had to learn and practice how to edit. After giving it a few goes I realized that it wasn’t as hard as I imagined. It required me to press one button, the slip clip button two times, from were I wanted it to begin the cut and end the cut, and if I didn’t want the section cut I would just have to click on it and press delete.

Difficulties of Editing

When filming we did every shot 2, 3or 3 times or even 5 or 6 times for the most difficult shots like the dolly shot. Therefore when editing I had to watch every take for each shot, carefully in order to decide which one was the most perfect, this required a lot of focus and attention. As in this dolly shot (image below) I had to decide between the first and the second, the one I chose was the one that had a sense of continuity and lighting was similar to the previous one. The attention and focus required when watching your clips and deciding which one you want was in fact longer then editing. This was because I gained so much experience and practice when spending free lessons and afterschool hours in the editing sweet, this experience made the process of editing much easier and quicker.
